Trump Threatens 100% Tariff on Nations That Tax U.S. Tech Companies

President Trump on Friday issued a stark warning to foreign governments, threatening a 100 percent tariff on any country that imposes digital services taxes on American technology firms. The announcement targeted European nations in particular, which Trump said have been moving toward levying fees on U.S. tech companies operating within their borders.

Digital services taxes are fees governments charge technology companies based on their revenue from local users or digital transactions. Trump said some European countries have been “close to actually” putting such measures in place, and that his administration would respond with sweeping tariff action if they proceed.

The threat is consistent with a broader pattern of aggressive trade posture from the Trump administration. Earlier this year, the administration proposed forced labor tariffs targeting roughly 60 nations, covering nearly all U.S. imports. A 100 percent tariff on digital-tax nations would mark another significant escalation in the administration’s use of trade penalties as diplomatic leverage.
