Supreme Court Clears Way for Deportations of Syrian and Haitian TPS Holders

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the Trump administration may proceed with deportations of immigrants from Syria and Haiti who had been shielded under Temporary Protected Status (TPS), handing the White House a significant legal victory in its immigration enforcement efforts.

The decision, issued June 25, 2026, removes a key legal barrier that had blocked the administration from removing TPS holders from those two countries. Temporary Protected Status is a humanitarian designation that shields nationals of countries experiencing armed conflict, natural disasters, or other extraordinary conditions from deportation.

The ruling marks one of the most consequential immigration decisions of the current term, directly affecting a large population of migrants who had relied on TPS protections to remain in the United States legally. The administration had moved to terminate TPS designations for both groups shortly after taking office in January 2025, setting off a legal battle that ultimately reached the nation’s highest court.
