Tennessee Democrats Flip Six House Seats as GOP Wins Eight Congressional Races

Why It Matters

Tennessee’s election results produced narrower margins in several major races and shifted control of six Republican-held state House seats. The results also left Republicans with eight congressional victories, one short of their stated goal of nine.

What Happened

Turnout in Shelby County rose compared with four years earlier, but more than 300,000 registered voters there did not participate. The statewide gubernatorial margin was approximately 53,000 votes.

Republicans had previously dismantled the old 9th Congressional District and divided Memphis among three congressional districts. In the new 9th, which Donald Trump carried by roughly 21 points in 2024, Brent Taylor defeated Justin Pearson by 2,539 votes, or roughly one percentage point.

The result contrasted with the wider margins recorded in other statewide contests. Bill Lee defeated Jason Martin by about 32 percentage points in 2022, while Marsha Blackburn defeated Jerri Green by less than three points.

An Associated Press analysis found that every Tennessee county moved toward Democrats compared with the 2024 presidential election. Democrats also flipped six Republican-held state House seats.

Victoria Broderick won the 4th Congressional District by roughly 280 votes. The Republican-held 9th and Democratic-held 4th replaced the traditional Democratic 9th.

Pearson said, “Tennessee politics will never be the same.”
