President Donald Trump announced that Stephen Miller will replace Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff, with Miller set to begin Monday. Miller has served as a domestic adviser and has been involved in the administration’s immigration crackdown.
Trump described Miller as “one of my most trusted advisors.” White House communications director Steven Cheung praised the appointment.
Wiles Moves to Political Operation
Wiles said Friday was her final day as chief of staff. She submitted her resignation to Trump in the Oval Office on Thursday, and a Republican Party official said the president accepted it.
Wiles will move to the Trump Political Operation. She oversaw Trump’s return to the presidency in 2024.
Miller Takes Role After Midterms
Miller joined Trump’s first presidential campaign as an adviser in 2016 and has worked with Trump across his two presidential terms. He had not commented on the election results as of Friday.
Democrats are expected to take control of both the House of Representatives and Senate in January. They netted seven Senate seats in the midterm elections, though Alaska and Mississippi were still counting results Friday.
Congressional Outlook
Democrats had won 253 of the House’s 435 seats, with 27 races still awaiting results. Robert Garcia, a Democratic congressman and likely incoming chairman of the House Oversight Committee, said, “Stephen Miller should lawyer up.”
Democrats are expected to investigate Miller after assuming control of both chambers, during the final two years of Trump’s second term.
