Study Finds Air Pollution Rose After U.S. Embassy Monitoring Ended

The findings highlight the potential environmental impact of federal data collection initiatives.

What Happened

In March 2025, the Trump administration ended a long-running State Department initiative that tracked and published air quality data from U.S. diplomatic missions worldwide. The program, which began in 2008 with a monitor installed at the Beijing embassy, had expanded to more than 80 locations.

A recent study led by Zoey Yiyuan Zhou of Columbia University analyzed satellite data from 46 cities where monitoring ceased. Researchers found no significant trends in pollution levels during the 300 days preceding the shutdown. However, three to four months after reporting ended, air pollution increased by an average of 30 percent.

The study indicates that satellite measurements correspond to an estimated 4 percent rise in PM2.5 particles. The most significant spikes occurred in Southeast Asian cities, including Manila, Rangoon, and Vientiane. Pollution levels tended to be higher in locations with fewer alternative monitoring systems.

Eric Zou, a researcher at the University of Michigan who grew up near a chemical plant in Shanghai during the early 1990s, noted the historical context of industrial pollution. “I lived a couple of miles next to a chemical plant and it was just really bad, really foggy,” Zou said.

The State Department declined to comment on the specific study but stated it is restoring public reporting of air quality data without providing a timeline for full implementation.

The current findings align with broader concerns about the removal of federal oversight mechanisms. The shutdown occurred amid wider administrative changes, including significant workforce reductions at other agencies such as the U.S. Education Department.

Zhou emphasized the value of transparent environmental data. “Data is just so important,” Zhou said.

The State Department has indicated it will resume public reporting of air quality metrics, though no specific date has been announced. Researchers plan to continue tracking satellite data to determine if pollution levels stabilize or return to pre-shutdown baselines as monitoring resumes.
