What Happened
Law enforcement agencies are hunting for a suspect following a deadly shooting that erupted during a block party in Vienna, Georgia. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, October 5, 2026, around 1:30 a.m. local time.
Approximately 1,000 people had gathered for a Dooly High School homecoming celebration. While the event was tied to the school, it was not officially sponsored by the district. Witnesses described confusion in the moments before the violence, with some initially believing they were hearing fireworks.
Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy noted the shift in atmosphere as the situation unfolded. “Some people were reporting fireworks and then someone said somebody been shot,” Peavy said.
More than 50 shots were fired during the attack. Two victims died at the scene, and 25 others were transported to nearby hospitals, with some suffering critical injuries. The two deceased victims were men aged 20 and 23, found several blocks away on Pine Street. Victims of the shooting ranged in age from 14 to 51.
Dooly County Sheriff’s Office personnel had been positioned at both ends of the crowd prior to the gunfire. No arrests have been made, and investigators have not identified a motive for the attack.
