Indiana Comptroller Elise Nieshalla launched the Federal Funding Expenditures Dashboard on Monday through the Indiana Transparency Portal website. The tool provides six years of federal spending data, allowing users to sort expenditures by federal department, program, state agency, spending category, and individual accounts.
According to state officials, the dashboard is the first public-facing platform in Indiana dedicated specifically to tracking federal expenditures. It complements existing transparency tools that cover state contracts, employee salaries, and overall government spending.

Federal grants totaled approximately $22.6 billion in fiscal year 2025, accounting for 42 percent of Indiana’s general revenue. The dashboard updates weekly with transaction-level data from state agencies. It covers six years of historical spending information across multiple federal departments and state programs.
Users can track expenditures from federal sources including the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Agriculture. Spending categories include social service payments, contractual services, and payroll costs.
How It Works
The dashboard focuses on dollars actually spent by Indiana agencies rather than federal awards issued to the state, distinguishing it from federal databases like USASpending.gov. When payments include both federal and state matching funds, the tool displays only the federally funded portion.
The system pulls data from the state’s PeopleSoft financial system and provides vendor-level spending details. State officials cautioned that figures are unaudited and may reflect delayed entries or later accounting adjustments.

Nieshalla said the dashboard gives citizens, state legislators, media, and federal partners the clearest view of how federal dollars move through state government. She added that historical data enables spotting trends and flagging areas needing extra review, assisting agencies working to identify fraud, waste, or abuse.
Governor Mike Braun praised the initiative, stating that transparency builds trust and the tool empowers citizens while strengthening confidence in how government manages public resources.
