Trade Truce Extended
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on Wednesday that Washington and Beijing agreed to extend their current trade truce through January. As of the announcement, Beijing had not officially confirmed the extension.
The agreement builds on a deal reached in Busan last year, which aimed to reduce tariffs that had climbed above 100 percent during 2025. Under those terms, China agreed to pause export restrictions on rare earth materials and increase purchases of U.S. agricultural goods, while the United States lowered certain duties on Chinese products.
Despite these efforts to ease tensions, both nations maintain significant tariff barriers. The Congressional Research Service estimated in July that the average U.S. tariff rate on Chinese goods stood at 36 percent, while China’s average rate on American imports was approximately 30 percent.
Artificial Intelligence and Security
Leaders from both countries were scheduled to discuss several key issues, including artificial intelligence, rare earth minerals, trade policy, Iran, and Taiwan. Treasury Secretary Bessent noted earlier in the week that officials are exploring mechanisms for mutual warnings regarding AI incidents that could threaten national security.
The conversation on technology comes amid growing caution within the U.S. industry. American AI executives have recently urged one another to slow the pace of development to ensure public safety. In contrast, a Chinese government spokesperson criticized an essay by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei titled “We Must Pace the Frontier,” calling it unfair and an attempt to stifle Chinese competition.
China has set ambitious goals for its own technology sector, stating that AI-powered systems should integrate into 90 percent of key industrial sectors by 2030. Ryan Haas, director of the China Center at the Brookings Institution, suggested the summit serves to demonstrate a robust relationship between President Trump and President Xi.
Iran and Regional Pressures
The United States has maintained a naval blockade on Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz for several months. This action disrupts an estimated 12 percent of China’s oil imports, even as China remains Iran’s largest trading partner.
Analysts speculate that President Trump may seek Beijing’s assistance in facilitating peace talks with Tehran. Nate Swanson, director of the Iran Strategy Project at the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Middle East Security Initiative, indicated that China could offer a diplomatic exit strategy for the U.S. president.
The Trump administration increased economic pressure on Iran last month by targeting financial intermediaries, including some Chinese entities. Treasury Secretary Bessent remarked that Chinese financial authorities have been actively engaged in the sanctions enforcement process.
