Why It Matters
A mass shooting in Muscatine, Iowa left six people dead Monday after a gunman opened fire at multiple locations across the city. Authorities say the violence appeared to grow out of a domestic dispute, with all victims believed to be relatives of the suspect.
What Happened
Muscatine police received reports of a shooting shortly after noon on Monday. Officers responding to a residence found four people with gunshot wounds; all four were pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect, identified as Ryan Willis McFarland, 52, of Muscatine, had left the home before officers arrived. He was located a short time later on a riverfront trail near a pedestrian bridge, where he had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Despite receiving medical attention, McFarland was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators subsequently discovered two additional victims at separate locations — one at a second residence and another at what public records indicate is a metal workshop. Both died from apparent gunshot wounds.
Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies described the incident as an “act of evil.” He confirmed that McFarland had a prior criminal record but declined to provide further details, noting the investigation remains ongoing. The names and ages of the victims have not been released.
In a statement, the police department said preliminary findings indicated the violence originated from a domestic-related dispute and that all six victims are believed to be family members of the deceased suspect.
