Wayne County Reprints 8,500 Ballots After Library Listing Error

Why It Matters

Election integrity relies on accurate ballot design and distribution. A printing error in Wayne County, Michigan, has forced local clerks to issue replacement mail ballots to thousands of voters just days before the election.

What Happened

Wayne County officials identified a misprint on absentee ballots sent to at least 8,500 voters. The error involved a candidate for a partial term on the Belleville Area District Library Board, who was incorrectly listed in the section designated for full-term candidates.

The mistake affected ballots distributed by three communities: Belleville, Sumpter Township, and Van Buren Township. Officials notified these jurisdictions of the defect on Sept. 28. Local election clerks stated they could not detect the error because the source documents provided for ballot review contained the same mistake.

“We had no way to know,” said Belleville Interim Clerk Michelle Bellingham.

Van Buren Township Deputy Clerk Brittany Beaudry noted that operations had been proceeding without issue until the discovery. “Everything had gone really smoothly,” she said.

Replacement ballots are currently being produced but were not expected to arrive before Monday. To manage the transition, poll workers will mark envelopes to help voters distinguish between original and replacement ballots. Wayne County has agreed to cover the costs for the new envelopes and ballots and has offered staff assistance to the affected townships.

Voters who return the faulty ballots will not face penalties. Election officials plan to hand-copy selections from the erroneous ballots onto new ones for tabulation purposes. Individual voter selections are not tied to names or identification numbers, preserving privacy during this process. Officials may also contact voters with faulty ballots to offer replacements before opening the envelopes.

Affected voters will receive a letter and a new absentee ballot with instructions. They are advised to shred the original erroneous ballot and wait for the replacement. No other offices or proposals on the ballot were affected by this printing error.

By the Numbers

8,500 — Minimum number of Wayne County voters receiving new mail ballots.

Sept. 28 — Date Wayne County officials notified affected communities of the error.

7,700 — Estimated number of ballots Van Buren Township must resend.

800 — Estimated number of ballots Belleville must resend (just over).

1,824 — Number of people who requested absentee ballots in Sumpter Township during the August primary.

10,000 — Approximate number of ballots Dearborn reprinted last year due to a similar error.

Zoom Out

This incident mirrors previous administrative challenges in Michigan elections. Dearborn reprinted approximately 10,000 ballots last year following a similar candidate listing error. Such occurrences highlight the logistical complexities of mail-in voting systems and the reliance on centralized source documents for local ballot production.

What’s Next

Local clerks in Belleville, Sumpter Township, and Van Buren Township will distribute replacement ballots to affected voters. Election officials will process returned faulty ballots by transferring votes to new sheets before tabulation. The goal is to ensure all valid votes are counted accurately despite the initial printing defect.
