Why It Matters
The incident underscores operational challenges facing autonomous vehicle services as they expand into passenger transportation. California regulators are moving to increase oversight of driverless taxis, including new ticketing authority for law enforcement.
What Happened
A Bay Area passenger traveling from Sunnyvale to San Jose Mineta International Airport on Monday encountered a service failure when his Waymo robotaxi departed before he could retrieve his checked luggage from the trunk. Di Jin told NBC Bay Area that he pressed the trunk release button upon arrival at the terminal, but the vehicle drove away immediately without opening.
Jin contacted Waymo customer service and was informed the autonomous vehicle had already returned to its depot and could not be redirected back to the airport. He boarded his flight to San Diego without his suitcase, which contained clothing and work materials.
By The Numbers
Waymo later confirmed the luggage was recovered at its local depot. The company offered Jin two options: pay for shipping to have the bag returned, or accept two complimentary Waymo rides to travel to the San Francisco depot himself to retrieve it — a round trip Jin estimated would take more than two hours.
The company declined to cover shipping costs in its response to the passenger.
What They’re Saying
Jin objected to both recovery options. “It doesn’t make any sense at all, because it’s not my mistake,” he said in remarks reported by NBC Bay Area.
A Waymo support representative wrote that the company would like to return the item quickly but “is unable to cover the cost of shipping labels or courier fees.”
Zoom Out
Autonomous taxi services have faced scrutiny over safety and operational reliability as deployment expands in California cities. Waymo operates driverless ride-hailing in parts of the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Phoenix.
California lawmakers this week advanced legislation allowing police officers to issue citations to autonomous vehicles for moving violations, a measure aimed at closing enforcement gaps as the technology becomes more widespread.
What’s Next
The legislation granting ticketing authority for autonomous taxis now heads to the governor for approval. Waymo has not announced changes to its luggage-handling protocols or customer service policies following the airport incident.
