A recount in Maine’s Senate District 30 Democratic primary has officially confirmed Sophie Warren of Scarborough as the party’s nominee, with the final tally showing a slightly wider margin than the razor-thin initial result that prompted her opponent to request a second count.
What Happened
Warren finished with 3,838 votes to challenger Rep. Ellie Sato’s 3,807 — a margin of 31 votes — after the recount was completed Monday. The original results had Warren ahead by just over 20 votes, a gap narrow enough that Sato, a first-term state representative from Gorham, requested the recount. The process ultimately expanded Warren’s lead rather than closing it.
Senate District 30 covers parts of Cumberland County and the Scarborough area. The seat is currently held by Sen. Stacy Brenner, who chose not to seek reelection and had endorsed Sato in the primary.
The Candidates
Warren, 30, is finishing her third term as a state representative. She was originally elected to the legislature as an independent and works professionally as a paralegal. Sato, 29, is completing her first term in the House, where she made history as the first East Asian person elected to the Maine Legislature. Before her time in the House, Sato worked as a Senate aide and currently works as a bartender.
The primary drew attention in part because of the contest’s dynamics within the Democratic caucus, pitting a more experienced legislator against a historic freshman who had earned strong institutional backing from the incumbent senator.
By the Numbers
3,838 — Warren’s final certified vote total
3,807 — Sato’s final certified vote total
31 — Warren’s winning margin after recount
20+ — Warren’s initial margin before recount
3 — Number of legislative recounts scheduled in Maine this week
More Recounts Ahead
Two additional primary recounts are scheduled for Thursday, both streamed live on the Maine Secretary of State’s YouTube channel. At 9 a.m., a Republican primary recount in House District 49 will revisit a contest where Suzanne Andresen defeated Nicolas Hamlin 609 to 601. At 1 p.m., a Democratic primary recount in House District 135 will examine results where Lisa Pratt holds approximately 50.5 percent of the vote, with challenger Rachel Phipps trailing by fewer than 30 votes.
What’s Next
With the nomination secured, Warren advances to the general election for Senate District 30. The seat represents a competitive Cumberland County area and will be an open race given Brenner’s retirement. The outcome of Thursday’s House recounts could further shape the composition of fall ballot matchups across Maine.
Maine has seen a number of closely contested legislative primaries this cycle, reflecting broader energy within both parties ahead of November. State legislative races like this one have drawn heightened interest as Democrats and Republicans battle over control of statehouses nationwide.
