Pemberton Township Mayor Matthew Bianchini, a Republican seeking reelection, charged toward resident Michael Sawka during a Wednesday night township council meeting, prompting several people to restrain him.
The confrontation occurred as a township employee who had recently been fired spoke to the council. Sawka has been a vocal critic of Bianchini.
Confrontation at Council Meeting
Bianchini later acknowledged that his conduct was inappropriate and said he lost his temper. “I just basically snapped,” Bianchini said.
The mayor and members of his family said Sawka and another resident made rude remarks about Bianchini’s wife and daughter. Sawka denied making comments about the mayor’s family.
Sawka said he did not approach Bianchini during the episode. “I’m just sitting there. I never got up. I sat there the whole time. I was calm the whole time,” Sawka said.
Complaint Seeks Two Charges
On Thursday, Sawka filed a municipal court complaint seeking assault and terroristic-threats charges against Bianchini. Police had not said whether they would pursue charges.
The Pemberton Township Democratic Club called for local leaders to remain composed and professional. Bianchini is seeking to retain his office in the upcoming election.
