U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky was hospitalized Sunday, prompting his office to reassure constituents and colleagues that the 84-year-old senator remains active on legislative and state matters despite his absence from Washington.

Spokesperson Stephanie Penn issued a statement Monday evening saying McConnell “is fully engaged with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters and is very appreciative of the outstanding care he is receiving.” No details about the nature of his current hospitalization were disclosed.

A Second Hospitalization This Year

This is not McConnell’s first health-related absence in 2025 and 2026. He was also hospitalized in February after experiencing flu-like symptoms. The recurrence has drawn fresh attention to the senator’s health as he finishes out his final term in office.

McConnell announced last year that he would not seek reelection, bringing to a close a Senate career that began with his 1984 election — a tenure spanning more than four decades. During that time he served in numerous roles including Senate Majority Leader, making him one of the most influential figures in modern congressional history.

Senate Leadership in Contact

Senate Republican Leader John Thune spoke with McConnell on Monday. Thune indicated the Kentucky senator is eager to return, saying McConnell “wants to be back, but I’ll defer to his staff on when,” according to reporting from Punchbowl News.

Race to Succeed McConnell Underway

With McConnell’s retirement approaching, a competitive race to fill his seat is already taking shape. Republican U.S. Rep. Andy Barr is among those campaigning to succeed him on the Republican side, while former state Rep. Charles Booker, a Democrat, is also seeking the seat. The Kentucky Senate race is expected to draw national attention given the seat’s prominence and the political significance of the state.

Kentucky has no shortage of federal policy issues at stake heading into the next election cycle, including healthcare funding and agricultural policy. Kentucky hospitals have recently navigated federal pricing disputes, adding another dimension to the state’s political landscape as the seat’s transition nears.

No timeline has been given for McConnell’s expected return to the Senate.
