Former Republican strategist Collin Corbett files to run for governor as independent

Why It Matters

Illinois faces a three-way contest for governor that could complicate the race between incumbent Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker and Republican nominee Darren Bailey. Former Republican strategist Collin Corbett’s independent bid represents an unusual challenge from within the GOP’s own consulting ranks, raising questions about whether a centrist independent campaign can gain traction in a state long dominated by two-party politics.

What Happened

Corbett, a Palatine resident and founder of the Republican political consulting firm Cor Strategies, filed petitions at the Illinois State Board of Elections to run for governor as an independent. He submitted roughly 37,000 signatures — well above the 25,000 required for independent and third-party statewide candidates.

Corbett stepped away from his consulting firm after the primary, citing concerns that the Republican Party had moved in a direction he could no longer support. He also shut down his “Smoke-Filled Room” political podcast around the same time.

For his running mate, Corbett selected Carolyn Schofield of Crystal Lake, a former Republican McHenry County Board member who ran on the lieutenant governor ticket in 2022. Schofield recently departed a staff position with the Illinois Senate Republican caucus and serves as vice chair of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning.

Corbett positioned his campaign as a bipartisan alternative to both Pritzker and Bailey. “I will stand up and oppose the president when he’s wrong,” Corbett said in public remarks after filing. He also criticized Pritzker, saying Illinois needs a leader who isn’t “just there to pick political fights with the president” for personal political ambition.

By the Numbers

  • 37,000 — signatures Corbett submitted at filing, exceeding the 25,000 required for independent statewide candidates
  • $40,000 — raised by Corbett’s campaign since May 1, per state election records
  • $121,500 — raised by Bailey since April 1, plus approximately $81,000 on hand at the end of March
  • $14.2 million — cash on hand for Pritzker at the end of March; he spent more than $300 million across his first two gubernatorial campaigns
  • 5,000 — signatures required for major-party candidates to access the ballot, compared to 25,000 for independents

Zoom Out

Independent gubernatorial bids in Illinois have historically struggled to break through, typically capturing a small fraction of the vote and failing to secure ballot access challenges. The structural disadvantages are significant: independents must collect five times more signatures than major-party candidates just to qualify.

Corbett’s campaign reflects a broader national pattern in which some former Republican operatives have grown uncomfortable with the party’s direction under President Trump, leading them toward independent or centrist political ventures. Whether such campaigns can convert discontent into actual votes remains an open question in most states.

The Illinois governor’s race is also complicated by activity in other parts of the ballot. In the 4th Congressional District, several independents filed to run after a last-minute candidate substitution by Democrats drew sharp criticism. As state lawmakers continue debating major issues — from housing policy comparisons between legislative proposals and the governor’s BUILD plan to biometric privacy reform — the governor’s race is shaping up against a backdrop of active legislative disputes heading into the fall campaign season.

What’s Next

Independent filings are subject to signature challenges, and Corbett’s petitions could face scrutiny from either major party. His campaign has acknowledged the primary challenge ahead is building name recognition and fundraising to competitive levels.

Corbett has claimed his internal data shows his campaign performing better in a hypothetical head-to-head against Pritzker than Bailey does, though independent polling has not yet tested that assertion. Bailey’s campaign dismissed Corbett’s bid outright, with a spokesperson calling it a “vanity project” that would benefit Pritzker.

The fall campaign will test whether Corbett can translate his consulting background and crossover support from both parties into the resources needed for a credible statewide race in one of the country’s most expensive political environments. Filing deadlines and signature challenges will be resolved in the coming weeks before the general election ballot is finalized.
