Florida Lt. Governor Jay Collins to Unveil Senior Protection Initiative in Lady Lake

Florida Lt. Governor Jay Collins is scheduled to hold a news conference Monday morning in Lady Lake to lay out a new policy agenda aimed at protecting the state’s senior population, as part of his ongoing campaign for governor.

Collins will present his “Live Florida” initiative at 10 a.m. at McCall’s Tavern on Alverez Avenue. The program centers on keeping older Floridians financially stable and independent by addressing a range of issues including rising housing costs, insurance premiums, healthcare expenses, and the everyday costs of living.

Fraud Prevention and Consumer Protections

Beyond affordability, Collins plans to detail his approach to combating financial scams and cybersecurity threats that disproportionately target elderly residents. He is also expected to outline specific consumer protection and public safety proposals designed with seniors in mind.

The Monday event builds on work Collins says he has already undertaken. In November, he launched Operation Senior Shield at an event in Jacksonville, a program that sends text and email alerts warning older adults and caregivers about active scam attempts. Collins described the program’s purpose at the launch, saying it gives seniors and their families the tools to “stay ahead of scammers.”

Campaign Context

Collins is seeking the Republican nomination for governor, with the primary election set for August 18. He faces a competitive field, with Congressman Byron Donalds currently holding frontrunner status in polling among GOP candidates.

Collins appeared on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” over the weekend, where he pressed for more direct engagement from rivals. He challenged opponents to participate in open debates, saying candidates cannot afford to avoid public scrutiny during a contested primary.

The Lady Lake area, situated in Central Florida’s retirement-heavy corridor, represents a key constituency for any candidate building a senior-focused platform. Florida has one of the largest and most politically active populations of residents 65 and older in the country, making elder welfare and financial security recurring issues in state campaigns.
