California Christian University Ranks Among Nation’s Most Conservative Colleges

Why It Matters

Biola University’s ranking as the 24th most conservative college in America highlights the distinct political climate at faith-based institutions compared to other California campuses. The ranking comes as conservative students at several state universities report difficulty organizing or hosting events on campus.

What Happened

Biola University, a Christian institution located in La Mirada outside Los Angeles, placed 24th out of 932 universities on a national ranking of conservative-friendly colleges compiled by Niche, a university profile website. The private evangelical school was the highest-ranked California institution on the list.

Niche determined the rankings using student surveys that assessed personal political preferences and perceptions of overall campus political leanings. Founded in 1908, Biola enrolls approximately 3,600 undergraduate students and requires all students to complete 30 credit hours of Bible courses regardless of major.

In a statement, university officials attributed the ranking to the institution’s commitment to integrating Christian faith and biblical principles across academics and student life. The university described faith-based colleges as playing a role in preserving freedoms and civic virtues.

By the Numbers

Only three California universities appeared in the top 100 conservative colleges nationwide. California Baptist University ranked 44th, while National University came in at 81st. Biola also earned recognition as the best Christian college in California and ranked ninth among 314 Christian colleges nationally.

The university placed eighth out of 40 California institutions for education quality and 12th out of 65 private universities statewide. Nationally, Biola cracked the top 100 private universities in the country.

Zoom Out

The ranking contrasts with recent tensions at other California campuses involving conservative student groups. Earlier this week, a conservative organization at UCLA School of Law faced administrative pushback after identifying protesters who disrupted a campus event. Conservative students at several state universities have reported challenges hosting speakers or organizing politically.

Faith-based institutions often maintain distinct campus cultures compared to secular public universities, particularly on political and social issues. Most require students to adhere to statements of faith and integrate religious teachings across curricula.

What’s Next

Biola’s nondenominational evangelical mission positions the university to maintain its conservative-leaning campus environment. The institution’s Bible course requirement and faith integration model remain central to its academic structure. As debates over campus speech and political diversity continue at California’s public universities, private religious colleges offer an alternative environment for students seeking faith-centered education.
