Florida Lawmakers Settle on $2.75 Million to Rename Palm Beach Airport After Trump

Why It Matters

Florida taxpayers will cover $2.75 million in rebranding costs as Palm Beach International Airport prepares to become Donald J. Trump International Airport. The agreement, reached during a special budget session, resolves a funding dispute between the two legislative chambers and moves the renaming closer to full implementation.

What Happened

State lawmakers reached a compromise on the taxpayer-funded cost of renaming Palm Beach International Airport after President Donald Trump. The House initially proposed $5.5 million for the effort — the full amount sought in a February appropriation request — but the Senate countered with half that figure. The House accepted the $2.75 million offer, with both chambers settling on the lower amount as part of the ongoing special budget session.

The nonrecurring funds are designated for signage replacement across airport grounds, vehicle and equipment rebranding, uniform and marketing updates, and technology upgrades covering overhead announcements, emergency messaging, and passenger processing systems.

The renaming legislation, signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in March, was sponsored by Sen. Debbie Mayfield along with Reps. Meg Weinberger of Palm Beach Gardens and Kim Kendall of St. Augustine — all Republicans. The House passed the measure 81–30 and the Senate approved it 25–11, both on party-line votes.

By the Numbers

  • $2.75 million — agreed-upon taxpayer allocation for the rebranding effort
  • $5.5 million — the House’s original funding proposal
  • 8.6 million — annual passengers served by Palm Beach International Airport
  • 4 miles — approximate distance between the airport and Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate
  • 4–3 — Palm Beach County Commission vote approving a trademark licensing agreement with a Trump-affiliated company

The Trademark Controversy

The renaming has drawn scrutiny beyond the budget debate. As the legislation advanced through committee, a Trump-affiliated company filed trademark applications for variations of the airport’s proposed new name, seeking rights over merchandise categories including clothing and luggage.

Senate Democratic Leader-designate Shevrin Jones of Miami Gardens attempted to block the arrangement through amendments, arguing the renaming served commercial rather than civic purposes. “This is not about honoring the President,” Jones said during committee proceedings. “This is about generating revenue from a public entity for a private company.” Republican members of the Senate Rules Committee voted the amendments down.

This month, Palm Beach County Commissioners narrowly approved a trademark licensing agreement with the Trump Organization on a 4–3 vote. Under the deal, the company gains approval authority over marketing materials referencing Trump’s biography, and airport retailers would be required to source branded merchandise through Trump-designated vendors. Because the agreement is non-exclusive, critics noted it leaves open the possibility that affiliated entities could sell airport-branded goods beyond the facility itself.

Some commissioners also raised concerns about the absence of a termination clause, which could bind the county to the agreement without a clear exit mechanism. The Trump Organization has said the President and his family will not receive royalties, licensing fees, or other financial consideration from the renaming itself.

Zoom Out

The Palm Beach airport renaming is part of a broader wave of efforts at the state and federal levels to attach Trump’s name to major public infrastructure. Congress has separately considered legislation to rename Washington Dulles International Airport in his honor. Such renaming efforts — typically symbolic — rarely involve the commercial licensing arrangements that have drawn attention in the Florida case.

Florida’s special budget session has addressed several high-profile spending items alongside the airport funding. Gov. DeSantis has also been promoting a homestead property tax abatement proposal as part of this year’s fiscal agenda. Separately, federal lawmakers with Florida ties have been active on national security matters, including legislation targeting Chinese surveillance technology.

What’s Next

With the funding agreement in place, airport officials are expected to move forward with implementation once the special session concludes and the budget is finalized. The physical rebranding of signage, vehicles, uniforms, and technology systems will follow on a timeline to be determined by airport and county authorities. The trademark licensing arrangement between Palm Beach County and the Trump Organization remains in effect, subject to the county commission’s ongoing oversight.
