Why It Matters

Amazon’s decision to expand its data center footprint in Northwest Louisiana signals sustained corporate confidence in the state’s infrastructure and workforce. The $6 billion increase from the original investment represents a major economic commitment that will reshape the region’s industrial capacity and demand for energy and water infrastructure.

What Happened

Amazon and Louisiana state officials announced Tuesday that the company is expanding its data center hub in Northwest Louisiana, adding a third facility to its original investment plan. The expansion includes sites across Caddo and Bossier parishes, with a new data center location at Resilient Tech Park in Shreveport. Stack Infrastructure will own and build the facilities in partnership with Amazon.

The expansion is expected to create 210 permanent direct jobs beyond the 540 jobs announced earlier in the year. Construction employment is projected to grow from 1,500 to 2,250 jobs during the build-out phase.

To support the growth, Amazon committed $400 million toward public water infrastructure improvements and pledged to fully fund all water and wastewater enhancements required by the projects. The company is also working with Southwestern Electric Power Co. (SWEPCO) and has committed to fully fund new energy infrastructure and grid upgrades needed to power the facilities.

Governor Jeff Landry characterized the expansion as validation of Louisiana’s business environment, stating, “Amazon’s decision to increase its investment in Louisiana so quickly sends a clear message about what they have experienced here.” SWEPCO president Brett Mattison added, “We’re ready to serve and ready to deliver the reliable energy our communities need to support new investment while protecting existing customers from the costs of that growth.”, as first reported by the Louisiana Illuminator

By the Numbers

$12 billion — Amazon’s original investment announced in February

$18 billion — total project value after expansion

$400 million — pledged investment in public water infrastructure

210 — permanent direct jobs from the expansion

2,250 — anticipated construction jobs after increase

Zoom Out

Data center investments have emerged as a major growth sector for Southern states competing for tech infrastructure dollars. Louisiana’s success in attracting Amazon’s multi-billion-dollar commitment reflects broader regional trends in energy availability and cost competitiveness. The state has also attracted Meta’s Hyperion data center campus in Northeast Louisiana, where Meta announced plans to nearly double the expected size of its facility. However, the Public Service Commission’s decision to allow Meta to keep job creation and electricity needs calculations confidential has raised questions about transparency in major industrial incentive packages across the state.

What’s Next

Amazon’s data center buildout in Northwest Louisiana will proceed through construction and staffing phases. The company’s infrastructure commitments—particularly the $400 million water investment—will require coordination with local utilities and government agencies. Regional power and water systems will need to scale capacity to meet demand from all three facilities as they come online.
