U.S. Senator Michael Bennet and Attorney General Phil Weiser faced off Saturday in Fort Collins in what may be their last major debate before Colorado’s Democratic gubernatorial primary, with Bennet seeking to draw a sharper distinction between the two candidates after months in which their platforms remained largely indistinguishable.
Bennet framed his candidacy around bold action on what he described as mounting state crises, pointing to housing affordability, healthcare access, and environmental pressures as areas demanding ambitious leadership. Weiser, who has also made these issues central to his campaign, pushed back on the contrast Bennet attempted to draw.
The two candidates have struggled throughout the race to separate themselves on policy substance. The primary is scheduled for June 30, leaving little time for either candidate to consolidate support heading into election day.
