The Transportation Security Administration is reversing a security policy that has restricted airport access for over two decades, allowing families to reunite inside secure terminals.
What Happened
TSA launched the Gateside program, permitting non-ticketed visitors with TSA PreCheck enrollment to accompany passengers to departure gates. This marks the first time since the September 11 attacks that individuals without boarding passes can enter the secure side of participating airports.
To participate, applicants must request a pass one to three days before their intended visit. They are required to provide their Known Traveler Number and select a specific airport from the participating list. Once approved, visitors must present a REAL ID or passport at the checkpoint and undergo standard TSA screening procedures.
TSA stated the initiative aims to make “the airport experience more seamless, convenient and family friendly.” Will Rogers International Airport in Oklahoma City is among the 13 airports currently enrolled in the pilot program.

The restriction on gate access was implemented immediately following the September 11 terrorist attacks as part of broader aviation security overhauls. For 25 years, families and friends were required to wait in public areas before passengers cleared security checkpoints.
The Gateside program leverages existing PreCheck infrastructure. Members of the expedited screening program already enjoy benefits such as keeping shoes, belts, and jackets on, and leaving laptops in bags during screening. The new policy extends these privileges to designated visitors who accompany enrolled travelers.
