Rubio Says Iran Stands Alone in Push to Control Strait of Hormuz Tolling
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Tuesday that Iran has no international backing for its proposal to impose a tolling system on passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping lane.

“The Russians are not in favor of a tolling system, the Chinese are not in favor of a tolling system,” Rubio said in remarks to reporters, underscoring that even nations often aligned against U.S. interests have declined to support Tehran’s position.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically vital waterways, through which a significant share of global oil shipments pass. Iran has periodically threatened to restrict access to the strait as leverage in diplomatic and economic disputes.

Rubio’s comments signal that the administration views Iran as diplomatically isolated on the issue. As nuclear negotiations and regional tensions continue to shape U.S. policy toward Tehran, the strait remains a key pressure point.
