Why It Matters

The North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services issued a public health alert after identifying potential measles exposure on a passenger train, reinforcing vaccination guidance for travelers in the state.

What Happened

State health officials confirmed that a passenger infected with measles traveled through North Dakota on an Amtrak Empire Builder train. The individual boarded the westbound service in Chicago and used the restroom facilities at the Minot train station at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 23.

The department reported the incident on Friday, noting that the passenger’s final destination was outside of North Dakota. Health authorities advised anyone who may have been exposed and lacks measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination to avoid close contact with others and monitor for symptoms for 21 days.

Officials emphasized that individuals developing symptoms must notify healthcare providers before seeking in-person treatment to prevent further community spread. Mary Woinarowicz of the health department stated, “This serves as a reminder to North Dakotans that measles continues to circulate with 2026 seeing the highest number of measles cases in the United States since 1986.”

By the Numbers

38 — Confirmed measles cases recorded in North Dakota in 2026.

3,887 — Total confirmed measles cases in the United States as of Thursday.

93% — Effectiveness rate of the MMR vaccine after a single dose.

97% — Effectiveness rate of the MMR vaccine after two doses.

21 days — Recommended symptom monitoring period for exposed, unvaccinated individuals.

Zoom Out

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data indicates that 2026 has recorded the highest number of measles cases in the nation since 1986. While North Dakota reported no new cases between May and late September, the recent exposure event highlights ongoing transmission risks in public transit hubs.

What’s Next

State health officials continue to urge residents to verify their vaccination status. Those with symptoms are instructed to contact medical providers prior to visits to limit potential exposure in clinical settings.
