Kansas City Secures World Cup 2026 Hosting Role Despite Long Odds

Why It Matters

Kansas City, Missouri, will host six matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including a potential Argentina-Portugal quarterfinal. The selection of a mid-sized Midwest city over larger metropolitan areas represents a significant boost for regional tourism and infrastructure investment, with organizers having invested more than $650 million in soccer facilities since 2013.

What Happened

FIFA announced on June 16, 2022, that Kansas City would serve as one of 11 U.S. venues for the expanded 2026 World Cup. Arrowhead Stadium, home to the Kansas City Chiefs, will host the matches in its 76,000-seat facility.

Kansas City competed against 33 other North American cities in the initial 2017 bid process. Several cities that hosted the 1994 World Cup, including Chicago, Detroit, Orlando, and Washington, did not make the final cut.

By the Numbers

Kansas City ranks 37th among U.S. cities by population according to the 2020 census, with 508,000 residents in the city proper and 2.2 million in the metropolitan area. Most other host cities rank in the top 10 for population. The tournament will span 39 days across venues from Mexico City to Vancouver, Canada. Organizers secured more than 225 buses for transportation during the event. Travel time from Kansas City International Airport to Arrowhead Stadium is approximately 22 minutes.

The Strategy

Local officials adopted an aggressive approach to impress FIFA inspectors during site visits. In 2013, Kansas City registered “Soccer Capital of America” as a trademark and began infrastructure investments. When FIFA officials visited, organizers staffed the airport terminal with volunteers and arranged demonstrations of youth soccer matches near the delegation’s hotel.

The city emphasized its central geographic location and lack of traffic congestion as advantages over larger coastal markets. Officials argued that shorter transit times between airport and venue would offset concerns about the city’s mid-market size.

What’s Next

Kansas City will prepare to receive hundreds of thousands of international visitors during the summer tournament. The possible Argentina-Portugal quarterfinal would feature two of soccer’s biggest stars in what could be Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s final World Cup appearances.
