Why It Matters

The indictment of a Washington state resident for aiding a mass shooting in Canada illustrates the cross-border challenges law enforcement faces when digital communication facilitates violent planning. Federal authorities are leveraging U.S. jurisdiction to prosecute individuals who provide logistical support to attacks occurring outside American borders.

What Happened

Federal prosecutors in Seattle filed a criminal complaint on Tuesday against James Cody Bryant, 30, alleging he aided and enabled the attack carried out by Jesse van Rootselaar. Van Rootselaar killed eight people in British Columbia in February 2026, including two family members at her home and five students plus an educational assistant at Tumbler Ridge School.

According to the complaint, Bryant and Van Rootselaar communicated daily for six months leading up to the violence. Their relationship began online years ago when Van Rootselaar was institutionalized, and they reconnected after she was committed a second time for setting her room on fire. During their recent communications, which began in August 2025, Bryant allegedly provided tactical advice and financial support.

Bryant sent money to Van Rootselaar to purchase components for an improvised explosive device, as well as new shoes and a lighter used in the attack. The pair discussed technical details for livestreaming the event, including using Starlink for better camera quality and whether to include audio. Bryant suggested targeting a grocery store or church, but Van Rootselaar ultimately selected the school.

Bryant sat for an interview with Homeland Security Investigations agents regarding his involvement. Van Rootselaar died by suicide during the attack after encountering police. The attempted livestream failed to broadcast. Van Rootselaar had allegedly stolen guns and ammunition from her family’s gun safe and convinced another person to purchase additional ammunition on her behalf.

By the Numbers

8 — total number of people killed in the British Columbia attacks

5 — number of students aged 12 and 13 killed at Tumbler Ridge School

30 — age of accused accomplice James Cody Bryant

6 months — duration of daily communication between Bryant and Van Rootselaar before the attack

Zoom Out

The case highlights how digital platforms can facilitate coordination for violent acts across international borders. Van Rootselaar reportedly watched livestreamed recordings of previous mass shootings to study tactics. The involvement of a U.S. resident in planning and funding an attack in Canada underscores the need for coordinated federal investigations between American and Canadian authorities.

What’s Next

Bryant faces criminal charges in federal court in Seattle. The complaint outlines his alleged role in providing financial support and tactical suggestions during the six-month planning period. Legal proceedings will determine the extent of his liability for aiding the attack that resulted in eight deaths.
