Energy Secretary Wright Says Administration Open to Options as Iran Tensions Weigh on Gas Prices
WASHINGTON — Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Sunday that the Trump administration is open to a range of policy options to address elevated fuel costs, as ongoing tensions in the Middle East continue to put upward pressure on gas prices.
Wright identified ending Iran’s nuclear program and restoring secure commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz as top priorities for the administration, noting that instability in the region could keep prices elevated in the near term.
The remarks come as consumers and lawmakers face mounting pressure over fuel costs, with some calling for a suspension of the federal gas tax as a relief measure. Wright did not commit to any specific approach but signaled the administration was not ruling options out.
The energy sector has faced broader reliability pressures as well. Grid operator PJM recently outlined reform options in response to unsustainable stress tied to price volatility. Wright has previously accused the Biden administration of deliberately weakening U.S. energy reliability, framing the current administration’s agenda as a course correction.
