Arkansas House Candidates Debate AI Rules, War and Rising Costs

Why It Matters

Three candidates competing for Arkansas’s 3rd Congressional District addressed artificial intelligence, military policy, energy, taxes and federal spending during a U.S. House debate. The contest pits Republican incumbent Steve Womack against challengers Robb Ryerse and Bobby Wilson.

What Happened

Womack is seeking a ninth term in Congress after first winning election in 2010. Ryerse and Wilson are challenging him for the district seat.

All three candidates supported some form of artificial-intelligence regulation and measures intended to protect people from harmful effects. Womack backed guardrails for AI and its data centers, while saying, “AI is here to stay.”

Ryerse called for halting new data-center development until facilities become energy independent, avoid pollution and no longer create neighborhood nuisances. “There needs to be a moratorium on data centers until data centers are energy independent, they don’t pollute the environment and they aren’t a nuisance to the neighborhoods that they are put in,” Ryerse said.

Wilson supported privacy protections along with standards governing data-center noise and zoning.

The candidates also discussed defense and foreign policy. Swarm Aero opened in Fayetteville this year and obtained more than $10 million in Air Force Research Laboratory contracts. Womack praised the company’s job creation and unmanned drones. Arkansas defense contractors also include Lockheed Martin, L3Harris and Raytheon.

Ryerse raised concerns about war and the possibility that Arkansas could become an international target. He said the Iran war and the president’s tariff war had increased costs for Arkansans. Wilson opposed all military interventions.

Wilson attributed high prices to large federal deficits, inflation and congressional budget failures. Womack called for additional refineries and a more cost-effective domestic energy system.

Federal budget policy was another point of disagreement. Congress approved a short-term funding bill last month covering the government through Dec. 11.

Womack voted for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which made the 2017 tax cuts permanent and is expected to reduce federal Medicaid spending by about $1 trillion during the next decade. The tax categories cited by Womack included tips, overtime and certain Social Security recipients.

What’s Next

Womack, Ryerse and Wilson will continue competing for the Arkansas 3rd District seat while presenting different positions on AI oversight, defense, energy, taxes and federal spending.
