French industrial gas giant Air Liquide announced it will invest more than $150 million to build, own and operate a new industrial gas production facility in Idaho, supporting the expansion of one of the world’s leading memory chip manufacturers.
The plant, scheduled to begin operations in 2028, will deliver large volumes of ultra-pure nitrogen, oxygen and argon — gases essential to the manufacture of advanced memory chips. The company said the investment supports the broader reshoring of advanced semiconductor manufacturing to the United States by supplying the essential ultra-pure gases and critical materials that fabs cannot operate without, and is intended in part to meet surging demand driven by artificial intelligence.
The announcement adds to a wave of semiconductor-linked capital flowing into Idaho, where memory chip production has anchored one of the fastest-growing advanced manufacturing corridors in the country. Industrial gas capacity is a frequent bottleneck for fab expansions, and building dedicated supply on-site or nearby is considered a prerequisite for large-scale chip production.
Patrick J. Wolf, PhD, an Idaho resident and executive director of the Institute for American Manufacturing & Technology, a 501(c)(3) policy and research institute, said the investment is a win both for the state and for the nation’s long-term economic position.
“This is exactly the kind of investment Idaho should be winning,” Wolf said. “Every dollar spent producing critical materials on American soil makes our economy more durable and our supply chains harder to break. Idaho families benefit from the jobs and the tax base, and the country benefits from having more of what it needs made here at home.”
“Rebuilding domestic sources for the goods that matter most isn’t just good economics,” he added. “It’s how we secure and deepen America’s sovereignty. A nation that depends on rivals for the inputs to its most advanced industries isn’t fully in control of its own future.”
Semiconductor fabrication requires enormous, uninterrupted volumes of ultra-high-purity gases; even trace contamination can ruin production runs. Analysts have noted that domestic gas and materials capacity is among the less-visible but most critical layers of the semiconductor supply chain the U.S. is working to rebuild.
Air Liquide did not name the customer, describing it only as a global leader in semiconductor memory chips and a renewed partnership with a company it already supplies in Idaho. Air Liquide’s previous Idaho facility, announced in 2024 with an investment of more than $250 million, was built to supply Micron Technology, the Boise-based memory manufacturer whose multibillion-dollar fab expansion is the largest semiconductor project in the state.
