1 Dead, 5 Injured in Mall of Louisiana Shooting as Police Detain Five Suspects in Baton Rouge
Why It Matters
A deadly shooting inside a major Baton Rouge shopping mall has raised urgent public safety concerns in Louisiana, putting a spotlight on gang-related violence in public spaces where families, teenagers, and shoppers gather. The incident occurred during prom season, and witnesses warned the death toll could have been far worse had the attack taken place just hours later.
The shooting is the latest in a string of violent incidents to rock Louisiana in a single week, underscoring the need for stronger law enforcement presence and accountability in public venues across the state.
What Happened
At approximately 1:22 p.m. local time on Thursday, April 24, two groups opened fire on each other near the food court at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, killing one person and injuring five others. Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr. confirmed the shooting was not a random act but rather a targeted confrontation between rival groups.
“This was not a random act. This was a disagreement, a fight between two different groups of people that we are still trying to unravel,” Chief Morse said. “And unfortunately, innocent victims got caught in the crossfire.”
Police said none of the victims were suspects in the shooting. Five suspects were taken into custody and were being detained and interviewed as of Thursday evening. Authorities confirmed they are still searching for additional individuals believed to be involved in the attack.
A Baton Rouge police officer assigned to the mall responded immediately when the shooting began, and an East Baton Rouge sheriff’s deputy who was in the parking lot at the time also rushed in to assist. Mayor Sid Edwards credited that rapid law enforcement response with saving lives.
By the Numbers
1 person was killed in the shooting at the Mall of Louisiana.
5 others were injured, including one person in critical condition as of Thursday evening.
5 suspects were taken into custody and are being questioned by investigators.
1 handgun was recovered at the scene; authorities believe handguns were used throughout the attack.
3 of the victims are high school seniors, according to Lafayette Parish Mayor-President Monique Blanco Boulet.
Eyewitness Account
Todd Terrell, president of the United Cajun Navy, was inside the Dillard’s at the mall with members of his charitable group when the shooting broke out. He estimated hearing between 15 and 20 shots fired and described the sound as resembling a fully automatic weapon.
Terrell said he had considered walking to the food court just before the attack. “Thank God I was sticking to my diet, because I was wanting some chicken shawarma,” he said. “I would have been there.” Terrell also warned that casualties could have been far higher: “It’s prom season. If it was later in the day there could have been more people there.”
The mall was closed following the shooting. In a statement, mall management said it was “heartbroken and angered” that its facility became the scene of the attack.
Zoom Out
The Mall of Louisiana shooting comes just days after eight children were killed in Shreveport, approximately 250 miles away, in a separate mass killing. That tragedy left one mother with a bullet still lodged in her face, according to a family member, highlighting the devastating human toll that gun violence is inflicting on Louisiana communities.
Across the United States, shootings in shopping malls and other public spaces have prompted renewed debate over the adequacy of law enforcement staffing in high-traffic venues. Many conservative policymakers have pointed to the breakdown of social order and weakened deterrence as root causes, calling for greater accountability and swift prosecution of violent offenders.
Governor Jeff Landry issued a statement expressing solidarity with victims and gratitude to first responders. “Sharon and I are praying for those affected and are grateful for a quick response by our law enforcement officials,” Landry said.
What’s Next
The Baton Rouge Police Department is continuing its investigation and is actively seeking additional suspects. Chief Morse urged anyone with cellphone video of the incident to come forward. Investigators have already used surveillance footage to identify several individuals, a process Mayor Edwards said moved “almost immediately” after the shooting.
“We know that there are more suspects out there,” Chief Morse said. Authorities are asking the public to contact Crimestoppers with any relevant information as the investigation continues.
